The Bike Station (Recycle to Cycle)
Volunteer Board Member
The Bike Station is keen to recruit 3 new Board members to add experience to our existing
board of trustees.

Commitment:
Board members attend a minimum of six meetings a year. The Bike Station Board has also implemented a sub-committee structure to review and recommend areas of improvement to the Board, whilst involving the experiences across the operational team. Sub-committee meetings take place quarterly or biannually, during working hours, to support staff involvement.
Trustees are also invited to the Annual General Meeting held in February.

 

Location:

  • The Bike Station, 141 Lauritson Place, Edinburgh

  • The Bike Station, 243 Gorgie Road, Edinburgh

  • The Bike Station, 284 High Street, Perth

At least one meeting per year is in Perth, others are in Edinburgh and there is also potential to attend meetings remotely. If members wish to bring children with them to allow their attendance in person, arrangements for this can be made. Or we can adapt the times of the meeting, reasonably, to accommodate caring requirements. We are particularly keen to recruit board members in the Perth & Kinross area. Expenses incurred travelling to meetings will be reimbursed.

Organisational profile:
We are a social enterprise and charitable company dedicated to helping people to
overcome barriers to cycling in Scotland. We refurbish, reuse and recycle donated bikes. Of
the bikes refurbished we either make these available as part of our community referral
scheme, Shifting Gears, or we sell them at affordable prices and use the proceeds to help
more people across Scotland get cycling. We also help people learn to ride their bicycles

safely and learn to repair them themselves. A key focus is to reduce inequalities: we work
for a future where everyone has the opportunity to enjoy cycling and its benefits, and can
access the support, advice and skills they need to keep their bike safely on the road.

 

Role description
The duties of a trustee board member are to:

  • ensure that The Bike Station complies with its governing document (the Articles of Association), charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations

  • ensure that The Bike Station pursues its objects as defined in its governing document

  • ensure that The Bike Station applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects. For example, it must not spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they may be

  • contribute actively to the board of trustees by giving firm strategic direction to The Bike Station, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets

  • safeguard the good name and values of The Bike Station

  • ensure the financial stability of The Bike Station

In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve leading discussions, identifying key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, and evaluating or offering advice on other areas in which the trustee has particular expertise.

 

We are particularly keen to recruit trustees with one or more of: legal experience, health
and social care experience, buildings and facilities management, fundraising, safeguarding
or finance.

 

We are also keen to recruit trustees from diverse backgrounds and particularly welcome
applications from women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities. We provide a buddying system, with existing board members offering mentoring to support new trustees. This is designed to make board membership accessible to anyone with relevant skills and life experience.

 

Person Specification

Essential Knowledge & Experience

  • Legal experience, and/or Buildings and facilities management, and/or Experience within health and social care setting

 

Desirable

  • HR/fundraising

  • Business Administration

  • Safeguarding

 

Each trustee must have:

  • a commitment to the mission of The Bike Station

  • a commitment to social and environmental justice

  • a willingness to attend meetings regularly and give of their time and expertise on specific issues

  • integrity

  • strategic vision

  • good, independent judgement

  • an ability to think creatively

  • a willingness to speak their mind

  • an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of a trusteeship, or if not aware, willing to learn

  • an ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions for the good of The Bike Station
