The post:

As part of the Senior Management team, you will be responsible for ensuring The Bike Station achieves its commercial income targets. You will lead on the development of new business and sales opportunities, providing detailed information on clear commercial value. Responsible for the success of the Edinburgh, Perth and Dundee retail environments. In collaboration with the Senior Management team, provide direction and support to the on-site Coordinators to ensure the effective coordination of day to day activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement long term commercial income strategies in support of the charity’s overall strategic vision.
  • Development of new business opportunities, demonstrating commercial value, a clear business case and how it furthers The Bike Station’s charitable objectives.
  • Work in collaboration with Communications and Marketing Manager to support effective external communication and marketing strategies.
  • Responsible for multi-site achievement of retail and sales targets across the organisation.
  • Presentation of alternative sale options for refurbished bikes including pop-up sales, hub and spokes models.
  • Development and maintenance of local partnerships including commercial, third sector and active travel stakeholders in Perth, Edinburgh and Dundee.
  • In collaboration with the Production Manager develop, coordinate and deliver sales and new product training to the Production team.
  • Oversee the activity of the Cycle Friendly Award Officers, developing new business opportunities as a result of their activity.
  • Oversee the development, coordination and successful delivery of commercial offerings, including but not limited to commercial Dr Bike.
  • Oversee the activity of local Coordinators, supporting the achievement of targets, delivering sales and new product training.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Management team, provide direction and support to the on-site Coordinators to ensure the effective coordinators of day to day activities.
  • Development of corporate partnerships to further our commercial and charitable objectives.

Person Specification

Experience:

  • Proven track record of a successful sales growth strategy within local retail and sales
  • Experience of developing new and commercial business opportunities
  • Significant commercial experience within the bicycle trade (or equivalent), including sales, and securing new products for sale
  • Proven experience with accurate sales forecasting, costing and budgeting
  • Strong partnership development, including from commercial, public and third sector organisation
  • Experience of multi-site line management, motivating and supporting teams.
  • Demonstrable experience of maintaining core organisational values when developing corporate partnership
  • Good understanding of the third sector and the financial challenges within the sector

Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good financial acumen and commercial business sense
  • An entrepreneurial approach
  • Strong business minded individual with a desire to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
  • Great interpersonal skills needed to understand dealers needs as well as develop and maintain positive working.
  • Efficient time management is essential to effectively carry out the role.

The post:

As part of the Senior Management team, you will be responsible for the development and successful delivery of The Bike Station’s communication and marketing strategies. You will lead on the development and integration of evaluation frameworks across the organisation to enable us to clearly demonstrate and communicate the impact and value of our activity. You will be responsible for the impact, quality and improvement of all external communications and marketing, raising our profile, our income and local engagement. The role will lead on the development of all digital and printed marketing materials and fundraising campaigns to engage the public, stakeholders and funders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain robust and effective external communication and marketing strategies to support The Bike Station’s achievement of its organisational objectives.
  • Lead on promoting an evidence-based approach and develop and support an impact and values-based culture within and across The Bike Station.
  • Develop, embed and utilise activity and project level evaluation frameworks, measurements and tools and periodically review and revise the system so that it is adapted appropriately to changing operating contexts.
  • In collaboration with the Communities Manager, support the development of a fundraising campaign to help secure unrestricted income.
  • In collaboration with New Business and Sales Manager, support the development of business opportunities and commercial strategies.
  • Ensure information is provided in user-friendly formats to key stakeholders, staff and volunteers.
  • Deliver training and support to all staff and volunteers to build the knowledge and skills of the team to use appropriate tools to evidence the impact of their work.
  • Oversight of the development of organisations website, social networks and the activity delivered by our Communications and Marketing intern.
  • Responsible for creating a house style guide and branding guidelines; championing brand identity, and ensuring messaging consistency within all external communications.
  • Development of the concept, design, copy, production and print of annual and project-based impact reports.
  • Preparation of quarterly bulletins for all staff and volunteers.
  • Other duties as required.

The Bike Station profile:
We are a social enterprise and charitable company dedicated to helping people to overcome barriers to cycling in Scotland. We recycle donated bikes, sell them at affordable prices and use the proceeds to help more people across Scotland get cycling, help people learn to ride their bicycles safely and learn to repair them themselves. As a charitable company we also support our activities through grant funding. We work for a future where everyone has the opportunity to enjoy cycling and its benefits, and can access the support, advice and skills they need to keep their bike safely on the road.

Time commitment:

A minimum of 4-7 hours per week, exact days to be agreed

Main tasks:

  • Customer service and sales
  • Sales advice

  • Recording donated bikes and parts
  • General retail duties in a shop environment

Skills/Experience:

  • Good communication skills, customer friendly
  • Experience and knowledge of different types of bicycles

Are you looking for a new challenge? We are looking for experienced bicycle mechanics to join our growing team in Edinburgh.

Status:
Full Time 35 hours per week. Two of the posts will have one-year contracts and one will have a six-month contract. Competitive rates of pay.

The posts will be at The Bike Station Edinburgh, 250 Causewayside, EH9 1UU.

The post:
The candidate should possess proven skill and experience as a mechanic, along with great communication skills. We have worked hard to build a strong reputation as a friendly, talented and reliable workshop, and these values need to be upheld and built upon. The ability to work as part of a team, and adapt to a changing work load is essential.
The main activity will be producing finished refurbished bikes to a high standard on a daily basis, with a target of three bikes a day, whilst maintaining a safe and clean working environment.

As the sale of refurbished bikes is the core business activity so its important that production targets are met. Flexibility is also needed as there can be a variety of mechanic duties to undertake, including warehouse storage, repairs, Dr Bike and other outside events. Some Saturday work will be required.

Qualifications:

  • Ideally you will have at least two years professional experience as a bike mechanic
  • A recognized qualification in bike maintenance and assembly is desirable but not essential
  • Driving Licence desirable but not essential
  • Basic IT skills

Cycle Friendly Employer Plus Award for RBS Gogarburn

RBS cycle friendly employer award

The Edinburgh Bike Station is proud to have supported the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Gogarburn HQ, who have been presented with the first-ever Cycle Friendly Employer Plus Award in Scotland.

Keith Irving, CEO of Cycling Scotland, and Wendy Graham from the Edinburgh Bike Station presented the award to Ross McEwan, CEO of RBS and David Monaghan, chief cycle champion at RBS.

This award is in recognition of the sterling efforts of RBS Gogarburn to support and encourage more staff to cycle. Efforts have included the introduction of a business mileage rate, the introduction of a pool bike scheme for staff, an exemplary bicycle user groups, support from senior management, and excellent changing and parking facilities.

The award is delivered with funding from Transport Scotland and supported by Healthy Working Lives.

The Edinburgh Bike Station is an accredited Cycling Scotland service centre, delivering local support for employers registered for the award.

The Cycle Friendly Employer Award is open to all Scottish employers.
