What is Kids Bike Life?
Kids Bike Life is our new project for 2024/25, working with schools, young people and their adults to encourage cycling.
We build relationships with these groups and surrounding community to develop a programme of activity to increase cycling in several key areas.
These key areas include:
-
Establishing bike buses
-
Delivering cycling training for children and adults
-
Providing free kids bikes through our Wee Bike Library
-
Including a selection of free adults bikes to help parents/guardians support their kids
-
-
Leading family rides
-
Hosting competitions, Bike Curious, and Dr Bike events
Where We Work
Kids Bike Life identified several key priority areas in Edinburgh and Perth to deliver our activities.
Edinburgh
Here's a glance at what Kids Bike Life is up to in Edinburgh.
Castlebrae High School
We run weekly bike rides with young people from Castlebrae, helping them build confidence, resilience, and cycling skills in a supportive environment.
Carrick Knowe Primary School
We hold monthly Dr Bike sessions, working with a different year group each month. Additionally, we lead a monthly Bike Bus, encouraging local children to cycle to school.
Craigmount High School
We provide a series of bike maintenance workshops for young people.
Tynecastle High School
We are collaborating with Tynecastle to develop a weekly bike maintenance club, offering students the opportunity to learn how to care for their bikes and build valuable practical skills.
St Andrew's Fox Covert Primary School
We recently completed a series of workshops with P7 students from St Andrew's Fox Covert, preparing them for a camp where cycling was a key activity. We are now working with P5 students to help them build skills and confidence for their upcoming Bikeability training.
Niddrie Mill Primary School
We run 'Developer' sessions in parallel with their Bikeability programme to provide additional support, in a smaller group setting for young people who are learning to ride.
Balgreen Primary School
We run 'Developers' sessions for P6 non-riders, providing support to help them start riding or build confidence on the bike.
Dalry Primary School
In the Autumn term, we ran an after-school club at Dalry Primary to help P4 and P5 students build their cycling confidence. We are now delivering a series of masterclasses with P5 students to further develop their skills.
Castleview Primary School
We run 'Developer' sessions in parallel with their Bikeability programme similar to Niddrie Mill.
Stenhouse Primary School
We are introducing two new workshops for P6 students at Stenhouse. The first is a 'Developers' session designed to support non-riders and less confident riders in building their cycling skills. The second is a bike maintenance workshop, where pupils will learn essential techniques for keeping their bikes in good working condition.
Perth
Here's a glance at what Kids Bike Life is up to in Perth.
Riverside Primary School
We run a weekly after school club that goes on bike rides to build skills and explore the area, weekly interventional work for pupils to encourage engagement in school, and a monthly bike bus.
Moncrieffe Primary School
We've run one Dr Bike and Bike Curious event at a Moncrieffe Primary School function.
Tulloch Primary School
We run weekly interventional work for pupils to encourage engagement at school through a mixture of bike maintenance classes and bike rides.
St John's RC Academy
We'll be holding in-school sessions for pupils to learn how to ride starting November 2024.
St Ninian's Primary School
We provide weekly interventional work for pupils to encourage their engagement in school, with plans to implement a weekly after school club for beginner cyclists.
Bertha Park High School
